Passwords are used at Virginia Tech to give us access to information and systems that are part of our daily activities. Cyber criminals also find value in the same information and systems we access. Cyber-crime is no longer limited to a small group of hackers; it is dominated by organized criminals who profit off of stealing information. While they have many sophisticated tools at their disposal, protecting Virginia Tech’s systems and information often comes down to strong passwords.
To ensure that strong passwords are being used, Virginia Tech’s IT Security Office will be requiring many of your passwords to be changed by July 1, 2011.
If you do not change your password by July 1, 2011 then your password will expire. Expired passwords will need to be changed to allow account authentication. Passwords that have been changed between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011 will be valid for 12 months from the date of the change.
